This is the start of a painting that I am working on. It’s my husband, Leland, as a young boy. I hope I can convey the sadness in his eyes. He’s winning an award for writing a short story which for most kids might be a simple task. He struggled so much with writing and spelling growing up. He says at the time that picture was taken, he had given up and was feeling defeated. He was in Special Education when this picture was taken and had zero help at home. Fast forward to today you wouldn’t know how little education he has. His unique way of thinking is impressive. He can fix literally anything, build anything, diagnose most mechanical issues because of the way his brain works. I am truly in awe of him and in love with the way he shows up for me and Noah. My son Noah at this age could be his twin, and he struggles with the same things. I hope it will serve as a reminder to Leland of how far he’s come, and an encouragement to Noah.
